As most readers of the Vegan Japan blog probably know, I am since two years running a small vegan cafe in Thailand's capital Bangkok, called Herwin's Vegan Cafe.
It's an international minded restaurant with an internmational kitchen and both local Thai customers, Indian customers, and the veggie gaijin, or, as foreigners are called here ; farang. Our most popular foods are our home made pizza's and eggless cakes .

With two years experience of running a cafe, cooking and baking, creating a nice atmosphere for our customers, a knowledge of how this city works, it's time to expand or open a new shop to work out some new exciting ideas that we have developed.

To realise a new shop we need financial help in the form of somebody making a modest investment in our new shop. Just think about this, with a modest amount of money that wouldnt even be enough in other countries to furnish a new cafe, we will be able to open a whole new shop in a mainstreet of Bangkok.

When i visited Okinawa during preparations for the JAPAN Vegan Restaurant Pocketguide i visisted and did eat several times in the Cafe Granma. So its great to see that after so many years of my first visit, this vegan cafe goes public !!! I only can imagine that the food must be even more delicious than the times i did eat there three years ago.

REVIEW Earth Shokudo in Kyoto

Earth Shokudo is a small restaurant located close to Hyakumanben in the

Kyoto University and Ginkakuji area. Go uphill to the east from the
Hyakumanben intersection and you will find the shop on your left. It is
a 100% vegan shop serving real Indian curry, Japanese style lunch/dinner
menu (teishoku) changing every day, noodles made of mate tea etc. The
owner is a friendly lady speaking English. The atmosphere of the
restaurant is relaxing and prices inexpensive compared to the quantity

and good taste of the meals. The building was a bookshop in the past,

also called "Earth". Even now, you'll find shelves well-stocked with

books. Earth Shokudo is open every day except Sundays, 11:30-15:00 and

18:00-22:00.

I didn't check it myself yet but i heard the following veggie restaurants closed their doors :
- Cafe 8. For all you vegs in the neighborhood, don't ya weep, just at the other side of the street is the veg restaurant Alaska, which is a very cool and hip place with exciting food.
- Der Akkord. This legendary Bakery in Tokyo's posh Omote Sando area closed due to the tragic death of the owner, r.i.p.
- J's Kitchen.
- Miki Tenkai. Who hasn't picked up a take out veg lunchbox at Daykan Yama station in Tokyo from mr Miki Tenkai ? Well, rumors has, this buddhist monk killed somebody (very un-cool) and is now serving time in jail !
-Vege Canteen. Such A Shame ! We Miss You !
-Hono Cafe.
-Salon Cuttho in Okinawa also reportedly closed it's vegan doors.

A Change To Help

As anyone can imagine, just a mere four months after the devastating and massive disaster that whiped away whole towns, crippled local infrastructure, and even caused a nuclear disaster, many people in the affected areas, including children, still live in shelters and sometimes struggle to get by and are dependent on gifts from grassroots groups who visit and donate necesary goods and food.

Martin Frid, long time resident of Japan, ex-employee of Saitama's Alishan Cafe, blogger, eco activist, author of the Safety Ranking Book (the original title is in Japanese Nippon Shoku no Anzen Ranking) is such a grassroot activist who visited the north with 10 people and 4 vans loaded with goods for the smaller shelters.

Martin wrote me the following mail :

I just got back from Fukushima and Miyagi with 4 vans and 10 people, bringing emergency supplies (food, clothes, rubber boots, books, manga, toys) to small villages along the Miyagi coast, were the tsunami devastation still is amazing 3 months later. We are going to the small refugee shelters too that don't get much help. Please donate and contribute if possible. I made a video with a slideshow of photos:

Tsunami Relief Donation End Result

For obvious reasons traveling to Japan has declined and so the need for buying a pocketguide. Still, we have sold 8 pocketguides and donated all the money to the Red Cross. To pump up our efforts we also have asked bookshop Kinokuniya to donate all sales from our pocketguide directly to the Red Cross Victim Relief Fund. Not sure how much pocketguides it is, but it is expected to be between 15, 20 pocketguides.
For now we stop our campaign.

Veggie Confusion! Seems like there is a NEW veggie restaurant in Tokyo with the same name as my all time favorite restaurant GOVINDA'S in the Nakano area, close by the famous Deva Deva.

Aparently this new Govinda's restaurant recently made a 5 hour trip to the Miyagi prefecture with 3 SUV's, loaded with veggie meals, and 800 kg of fruits and vegetables, and visited 5 refugee shelters.

Hello my veggie friends,

Tokyo sure has become an exciting hot spot for veggies the last years. New places just keep popping up, i mean, very good and profesional veggie places and the diversity is just awsome, like the new exciting raw food Rainbow Raw Food to the humble and small vegan noodle shop Asahi and recently a new Veggie Taiwan restaurant opened.
To quote a veggie resident who did eat there and informed me about this place : "The food was great! Also large menu, large portions, large restaurant, and low prices. I couldn't believe my luck!"

Got a free day ? Go veggie restaurant hopping, it might take you to never-visited areas of Tokyo while discovering a new veggie place, new veggie foods, and supporting the growing veggie scene in Tokyo.

Veggie Steady Go! was recently in Thailand and the result can be read in their latest issue ! 6 pages of Thai veggie and organic adventures including three pages with reviews of veggie restaurants in Bangkok.
The reviews feautures a good mix of traditional vegan Jay restaurants (Arawy and Baan Suan Pai), and some new vegetarian restaurants like Thamna and Waterdrop Teahouse, and newer vegan restaurants like Loving Hut and Herwin's Vegan Cafe.

Anybody who has the Japan Vegan Restaurant Pocketguide should check out the updates. We have finished checking if all the restaurants in the pocketguide are still in busines.
In Tokyo , a surprisingly low number of 5 veggie restaurants have closed their veggie doors, while on the other hand at least around 10 NEW veggie restaurants have started serving veggie foods to the Tokyo people.
That means, all in all, vegetarianism is growing in Japan and that's good news.

Last sundays Against Meat Japan demo in Osaka was a succes with around 100 people showing up. The demo was filmed by the Supreme Master TELEVISION, an international webbased television channel.

Against Meat Japan has regular flyer events and demo's in the Kansai region.
In september there is a special "Candlenight For Animals" planned..

Hello everybody,

i have been rather busy with my new vegan cafe here in Bangkok. This month we started with a new menu and that means some extra work like making new menu's, brochures, designing bigger pizza take out boxes for our new bigger pizza's, practising our new dishes like our new vegan yummy yummy icecream..:-)

And...i am finishing making the Bangkok Vegan Restaurant Pocketguide, which took more than a year to make but finally next month it will hit the stores !
Some cool Thai vegans have helped enormuosly with making this new vegan pocketguide.

I will post more regularly for the coming weeks.

First Vegan Earth Day Festival Kyoto !

ever visited an Earth Day Festival ? well, i did last year in Tokyo, and it was rather dissapointing. It wasn’t “Green” nor was it “Vegetarian”, not even “Vegetarian-friendly”.
Food booths selling roasted pork were the most populair food booths. Roasted pork ??? The meat industry is responsible for much environmental damage worldwide and also is one of the worlds largest emiters of Greenhouse gasses that are responsible for Global Warming. Instead of serving meat, this festival should promote a vegetarian diet and inform people about Global Warming and the meat industry.

Seems i am not alone with these thoughts. :-)

Beginning of may the organisers of the famous Vegetarian Festival Kyoto will organise another great festival ; the VEGAN Earth Day Festival. It will focus on the relation between the environment and our diet.
Living in Tokyo and looking for a nice weekend trip ? Sunday may 2 is a good reason to take the Shinkansen to Kyoto and the new Vegan Earth Day Festival !

The Doughnut Plant has 8 shops and 7 other shops that are selling their donuts in Tokyo. Doughnut Plant doughnuts are made without eggs and some of them are also without milk. That means they are vegan . ;-)

Tragedy in Nagoya

Nagoya is Japan’s third largest city and has about seven veggie restaurants, most are far from the center and serve similar kinda macrobiotic food.
The one exception, the vegetarian chinese restaurant Chen Fu in downtown Nagoya has been closed since recently. Bummer.
The Chen Fu is part of several other chinese restaurants operated by the sympathetic and vegetarian mr Chien Fu. The other chinese veggie restaurants are in Tokyo and both serve a partly diferent menu. Recommended.

Tragedy in Okinawa

When i visited the Ii-en in Okinawa City two things were clear to me : first, the food was just absolutely great and prepared by a master cook, second, all times i visited this place there were hardly any customers at all. So i am not surprised but yes a little bit sad that this great place closed. We all hope the owner will open a new veggie restaurant somewhere else and share his great cookings with many other people.

Talk Or Not To Talk The Veggie Talk

When you are a veggie, should you talk about that whenever you have the oportunity, such as when your non-veggie family or co-workers invite you for a non-veggie dinner ?
Or should you be silent and don’t bother your non veggie friends with your diferent lyestyle ?

Most western veggies really talk the talk to just anyone and everywhere. A restaurant not serving at least a few veggie dishes ? Veggies always complained loudly about that. The result is that restaurants have listened and now at least most restaurants serve some veggie options.
Western veggies are loudmouths, maybe not always polite, but it works.

Barbie Hsu, and other celebrities, openly and actively support vegetarianism.

Many japanese veggies on the other hand, seem to rather prefer not to talk about there veggie lyfestyle with their non veggie friends, co workers, or in a non veggie restaurant. It seems better to just join and dont talk veggie, because people might think you are strange. A Japanese veggie i know, even did eat meat because she was invited at a dinner and she wanted to “respect” the family and don’t be rude.

What is your opinion, should veggies talk the veggie talk or be silent ?

Bad News.
This month Japan’s one and only vegan Izakaya (= a traditional japanese pub that serves, besides alcoholic drinks, foods. Something like an Irish pub.) has been closed.
“Genmai SaiSai Izakaya Non” opened in 2005 in Tokyo’s Meguro-ku. We will miss the yummy food prepared by the vegan owner and the great atmosphere of this unique vegan place.
Good News.
The owner is considering opening a new Izakaya somewhere in Kanagawa prefecture. When there are more details you will read it on “Vegan Japan”.

Vegan becomes Vegetarian

We all remember and still talk about the legendary vegan cafe Cafe Peace in Kyoto. Without a doubt this was the best vegan place in Kyoto and all of Kansai region. In 2008 however the vegan owner had to sell the place, and the only candidate was a non vegan. The vegan cafe was sold with the promise that it would stay a vegan cafe. Now, it seems that they started to use dairy products and the restaurant Cafe Proverbs 15 : 17 is no longer vegan.

Seems like the only remaining true Vegan Cafe in the Kansai region is the Raku Cafe in Osaka which opened just a year ago.

Vegan Earth Day Festival

Last year i visited the Earth Day Festival in Tokyo. It was a sunny day and there were much visitors that day. To me, this mega event with a high media profile was such a huge disapointment. Despite the environmental sound of the festivals name, Earth Day, it’s just a commercial festival. Most of the food that day wasn’t vegetarian. Most food that day was meat, with some booths only selling fried meat.
Selling and promoting MEAT on a supposedly environmental event is .... not very environmental. The whole meat industry is one of the biggest contributors to greenhouse gasses that warm our planet and causes catastrophic climate changes.

Anyway, i wasn’t the only one feeling rather disapointed by this commercial meat-eating and meat promoting “environmental festival”.So, guess what, thanks to active japanese vegans soon Japan will have another GREAT national vegan festival. Besidess the already great and famous Tokyo Veggie Foods Festa and the Kyoto Vegetarian Festival, both in october, this new festival called Vegan Earth Day will be on may 2 (sunday) in Okazaki Park, Kyoto !!

Unilever, one of the worlds largest consumer goods company and the largest user of palm oil, has terminated its contract with an indonesian Palm Oil producer because of environmental reasons.

Unsustainable Palm Oil plantations are the main reason for the cutting down and destruction of the lasts rainforests in Borneo (Malaysia) and Indonesia. These rainforests are the last homes of the Urang Utan, Tigers, and other animals.

Its great to see that a multinational makes an ethical decision, but lets not forget that this decision was only made after long and much protests, both from individuals as well as environmental organisations such as Greenpeace.

Save The Whales

This year the japanese whaling fleet has a quota for 750 mink whales and 50 fin whales, which are endangered and on the CITES list of Endangered Animals.

Killing whales is extremely cruel, it can take up to 45 minutes before the gentle whale is dead.
In order to kill these animals, the whaling boats have to make enormous journeys far away to the Antartic. This costs a lot of fuel and is extremely polluting and contributes to global warming.

The Japanese whalers and Japanese governement call this yearly whale killing “scientific research” in order to make this a legal killing.
But outside Japan nobody believes this, not Marine Biologists, not other governemenst, not any people outside Japan.

Luckely for the whales there is the Sea Shepherd who are protecting the whales in the cold and far away Antarctica. And the governement of Australia is thinking about legal actions against this illegal killing of whales, because many of the whales are killed inside an australian whale sanctuary.

Anti Fur Isetan

Shopping is entertaining and i regularly go shop in Isetan or Kinokuinya.
Just the other day i could find a French Frie Cutter that i was looking for for long time !!
But sometimes shopping is less nice, because all too often we are confronted with fur. But what can we do ? We can join an anti fur demo, like last month's Anti Fur demo in Tokyo. But what can you do the rest of the year when you see fur ? Feel helpless, frustrated and sad ?

While wandering the Isetan floors, a couple of weeks ago i saw three fur coats at the "Pinky and Diana" section. As a regular Isetan customer i decided to make a complaint, so i did go to the sales staff. Sales staff don't have any decision power, so when making a complaint, you have to do it to the manager. I talked with the sales staff a little about fur, they don't know anything and hardly can understand but thats okay, and i tell them i want to see the manager to make a complaint.
Long story short, first a lady comes who turns out not to be the manager, and finally a gentlemen comes who is the manager of the ladies clothes. I shortly and kindly tell him i a am shocked to see fur in Isetan and ask his email adres so i can send information about fur from Peta.
Long story short, the next day i send him a polite email with my polite complaint and short info with link about fur.

One week later when i visit Isetan i am happy to see there is no more fur.

Thank you Isetan.

When you see fur (or other animal cruelty) please talk about it with staff and make a polite complaint with the manager. You are customer, so you have the right to complain.

Here are some photo’s from last months Anti Fur demonstration in Tokyo. This yearly demo was organised by Animal Rights Center Japan and around 300 people joined.

Good News From McDonalds

McDonalds decided to close all of its three restaurants in Iceland. we at Vegan Japan congratulate McDonalds with this animal friendly decision.
McDonalds blames the bad economy and the rising costs of the ingredients which are imported from Germany. Furthermore they also blame that Iceland is a too small country with only 300.000 people.
It’s not the first time for McDonalds to pull out of a country. In 2002 they did leave 7 countries.
